HFI Model Portfolio
Disclaimer
– Historical Performance / Methodology
The HFI Model Portfolio returns represent the “average return” made by our
clients since January 1, 1993, based on the combined returns for our growth
portfolios over that time period. All returns over one year are average annual
compound rates of return.
The returns from 1 Jan 93 to 30 Sep 96 were calculated using our two model
mutual fund portfolios, an RRSP and a Cash Account. The returns over this period
reflect a commission charge of 0.25% each time a switch was made. Starting 1 Oct
96 HFI began using the average return of all of our growth mutual fund
portfolios, based on the return of our actual money in each portfolio
(approximately equal weighted and up to 14 different portfolios). The returns
over this period do not reflect any commissions or switch fees that may have
applied to individual accounts. We continued with this method until the end of
2003.
Starting in 2004 the returns reflect the average returns of our
Qtrade growth portfolios, which included some ETFs as well as mutual funds.
Since we started the HFI pooled funds at the end of April 2005, only the return
of the HFI Growth Pooled Fund has been used. Since January 1, 2004, the returns
do not reflect the effect an individual’s investment management fee paid to HFI
would have had.
Whenever the amount of money was added to or taken away from the model
portfolio or the portfolios it tracked, the fixed dollar amounts of the HFI
Model Portfolio had all previous month end values adjusted so that the series
would be continuous, while maintaining the same percent change returns in the
model portfolio. In order to construct a chart of our HFI Model Portfolio and
the five major indices, which we have also tracked since January 1, 1993, we
adjusted each series to a value of one on that date, as well as adjusted the
foreign indices to Canadian dollars. With the exception of the SM Universe Bond
Index, none of the indices’ returns include dividends.

Hypothetical Performance:
Hypothetical performance results have many
inherent limitations, some of which are described below. Hypothetical
performance does not represent actual performance and should not be interpreted
as an indication of such performance. Actual performance for client accounts may
be materially lower than that of the growth model portfolio.
No representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve
profits or losses similar to those shown. In fact, there are frequently sharp
differences between hypothetical performance results and the actual results
subsequently achieved by any particular trading program. One of the limitations
of hypothetical performance results is that they are generally prepared with the
benefit of hindsight. In addition, hypothetical trading does not involve
financial risk and no hypothetical trading record can completely account for the
impact of financial risk in actual trading. For example, the ability to
withstand losses or to adhere to a particular trading program in spite of
trading losses are material points which can also adversely affect actual
trading results. There are numerous other factors related to the markets in
general or to the implementation of any specific trading program, which cannot
be fully accounted for in the preparation of hypothetical performance results
and all of which can adversely affect actual trading results.
Investment Performance Disclaimer:
Commissions, trailing commissions, management fees and
expenses may all be associated with investments. Indicated rates of return are
the historical annual compounded total returns, including changes in unit value
and reinvestment of all distributions; and do not take into account sales,
redemption, distribution, optional charges or income taxes payable by any
security holder that would result in reduced returns. Mutual funds, Exchange
Traded Funds and Pooled Funds are not guaranteed, their values change
frequently, and past performance may not be repeated. Please obtain and read the
simplified prospectus/offering memorandum before investing. Copies are available
from your financial adviser or from the mutual fund company directly.
